In 1972 Covington was replaced by John Barbata and another album was released. At the end of that tour Marty Balin left the group. Papa John Creach started performing with the group during their fall tour. During the following three years the group released a number of albums and singles and appeared at major festivals including Monterey and Woodstock.ĭuring 1970 Kaukonen and Casady started to concentrate on their work with Hot Tuna and Spencer Dryden was replaced by Joey Covington. The new, "classic" line-up of the group (Balin, Kantner, Slick, Kaukonen, Casady, Dryden) released their first single at the start of 1967 and shortly afterwards the second Airplane LP Surrealistic Pillow. This line-up recorded 3 singles and one album.ĭuring 1966 Spence was replaced by Spencer Dryden and Signe Anderson was replaced by Grace Slick who was the lead singer with the Great Society. The group signed to RCA Victor in December 1965. Before the end of the year Peloquin was replaced by Skip Spence, Harvey was replaced by Jack Casady and Signe Toly married and became Signe Anderson. Kaukonen suggested the group name Jefferson Airplane.
The initial line-up of this group, which made it's debut on August 16, 1965, was Balin, Paul Kantner, Jorma Kaukonen, Signe Toly, Bob Harvey and Jerry Peloquin.
